Bumming around town with Bill Bumerton
Bumerton is a retired Navy fighter pilot who had been missing in action for several years while he traversed the globe looking for greener grass. He discovered the grass is only greener here (it’s blue in Kentucky), so he returned to again take charge of his 1954 green Hudson Hornet that had been in storage, refilled his pipe, and is continuing his smokin’ ways. Here is what he recently told us at the Sports Paper.
We are bearing down on fall and winter, and you know Big Dawg why I can tell? Give up? Because the Kitsap Scratch Bowlers Association is about on us and Scott Evans at the Bremerton Parks and Recreation is gearing up for the Bremerton City Basketball League. This, Big Dawg, will be the 42nd season for KSBO. The local bowlers open the season with the Tony’s Restaurant Open and the 205-and-Under George Shafer Memorial at All Star & Casino in Silverdale. The KSBO won’t return to Olympic Lanes because it’s too difficult to get security clearance at Bangor. KSBO will now hold 12 tournaments and split them into two seasons. KSBO will be silent from Dec. 6 to Feb. 7. Other changes include the ability of members prepaying two tournaments even though they might now bowl in them. That makes it easier to have the required six tournaments to qualify for the finals. Prepaid entry must be paid before the tournament you would have bowled in begins. For the first time, Big Dawg, youth bowlers at least 15 years of age can bowl in a KSBO singles event if they have an average of 175 or greater. Winnings will be awarded in the form of scholarship money… Evans is now accepting team registration for the Bremerton City Basketball League. The deadline is Wednesday. The season runs from Oct. 6 to Dec. 11 and includes eight division games plus a season-ending tournament. Contact Evans at (360) 473-5427 or go to the city Website at www.ci.bremerton.wa.us. Click on Parks and Recreation, sports and then Basketball. You are not too old to play, Big Dawg, but you must be able to walk. … North Kitsap Babe Ruth is looking for volunteers for the 2915 baseball season. A Babe Ruth meeting will be held Sept. 23 agt 7 p.m. at the Babe Ruth Field Club House at Snider Park in Poulsbo. For more information, contact Tom Tucker at agangtucker@aol.com or Thomas.e.tucker1@mnavy.mil or at (360) 516-3354. That’s it Big Dawg, now go get me a tall latte.
