2015 U.S. Open Championship First Round Notes
Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson
- Dustin Johnson’s and Henrik Stenson’s 65s are the lowest scores to co-lead the U.S. Open since Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf shot 63s (7 under) at Baltusrol in 1980. Tim Simpson and Scott Simpson co-led with 66s (6 under) at Medinah in 1990.
- The 65 is Johnson’s lowest score in 27 rounds played in the U.S. Open. His previous best was a 66 in the third round in 2010 at Pebble Beach.
- Johnson has shot 65 twice before in major championships – in the third round of the 2013 PGA Championship and second round of the 2014 British Open.
- The last time Johnson led a U.S. Open at the conclusion of a round was after 54 holes at Pebble Beach in 2010.
- The 65 is Stenson’s lowest score in 29 rounds played in the U.S. Open. His previous best was a 68 in the fourth round in 2009 and second round in 2013. It is also his lowest round in a major championship. His previous best was a 66 three times, most recently in the fourth round of the 2014 PGA Championship.
- The last time Stenson led a major at the conclusion of a round was after 36 holes (co-leader) in the 2006 PGA Championship.
Record-Setting Eagles on Hole 12
- The 12th hole yielded 11 eagles in the opening round. That is the highest number of eagles recorded on a single hole in any U.S. Open round since 1985, when course statistics started to be kept.
- In 2014 at Pinehurst No. 2, the par-5 fifth hole yielded eight eagles in the third round. That was the previous high.
- From 1985 to 2014, 13 championships yielded 11 or fewer cumulative eagles.
Course
- Twenty-five players broke par in the first round. That is the most in an opening round since 29 players broke par in 1992 at Pebble Beach and the most in any U.S. Open since 32 players broke par in the fourth round of the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional.
- The 11th hole played at 541 yards in the first round. This makes it the longest par 4 in U.S. Open history.
- The opening-round scoring average of 72.72 is the lowest opening-round scoring average since 2003 at Olympia Fields when it was 72.68.
- Three holes played under par in the first round (Nos. 8, 12 and 18).
Players
- Masters champion Jordan Spieth opened with a 2-under 68. The last Masters champion to win the U.S. Open in the same year was Tiger Woods in 2002. It has been done five times by four players. The others are Jack Nicklaus, 1972; Arnold Palmer, 1960; Ben Hogan, 1951 and 1953.
- Woods shot an opening-round 80. That is his highest score in 68 U.S. Open rounds. His previous high was a 77 in the third round of the 1996 U.S. Open when he was an amateur. It is the fourth time he has shot 80 or higher as a professional.
- Woods’ 80 is his second-highest score in a major championship. He shot an 81 in the third round of the 2002 British Open.
- No player in the top six on the leader board has won a major championship.
Ageless
- Colin Montgomerie, 51, and Miguel Angel Jimenez, 51, both shot 1-under 69s in the first round. This is believed to be the first time two players over 50 broke par in the same round in the U.S. Open since World War II.
Amateurs
- Brian Campbell (3-under 67) and Ollie Schniederjans (1-under 69) posted the first under-par opening rounds by an amateur since Drew Weaver in 2009 at Bethpage Black.
- Campbell’s 67 is the lowest score by an amateur since Nick Taylor shot a 65 in the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open.
- Campbell’s 67 ties the lowest first round by an amateur in the U.S. Open. Mike Reid (1976) and Marty Fleckman (1967) also shot opening 67s.
- The last time two amateurs broke par in the same round was in the second round in 2011 (Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley)
Statistics
- Beau Hossler led the field, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation, but needed 37 putts in his opening round.
- Russell Henley and George Coetzee led the field in driving accuracy, hitting all 14 fairways in regulation.
- Henrik Stenson and Brian Campbell led the field in putting with 27 putts.
