Olympic girls and boys show their track power at state, Van Amen wins third discus title and DePoe and Campbell surprise

Olympic High School senior Jaleel Elmore won two events (200 and 400) placed second (100) in another and anchored the 1600 relay team to another victory as the Trojan boys claimed fourth place in the 2A State Track and Field meet.

Albert MacArthur, a senior, moved his two school records in the long jump and triple jump out further at the 4A State Track and Field meet with two second place finishes. He now has the long jump mark at 22 feet, 11and three-quarter inches and triple jump mark at 47 feet, one inch.

Junior Nolan Van Amen also pushed a SK record out further in the discus, winning the event at state for the third time with a throw of 184 feet, eight inches. He also took third at state in the shot put where he also holds the school record at 59-10.5.

Van Amen now has one year left to shatter the all-time West Sound discus record held by Bainbridge’s Matt Wauters, who went 188-01 in 2004.

One of the more impressive efforts came in the girls 800 prelims at 4A state when South Kitsap freshman Paxton DePoe seemingly came out of nowhere to post the best time on the Olympic Peninsula this year with a clocking of 2:15.47.

DePoe finished eighth in the finals with a time of 2:22.53.

Another local underclassman also rose to the occasion. That would be North Mason sophomore Lily Campbell who finished fourth in the State 2A meet in the javelin with the second best throw on the peninsula this year. She heaved the spear 120 feet, five inches to score four of North Mason’s six points in the girls’ team standing.

Olympic’s girls took second in the team race as the combined boys and girls team’s put on quite a show. The Trojan girls won the 400 relay and set the all-time West Sound mark in that event in the prelims with a run of 48.46.

Kelli Ford, Hanna Troy, Morgan McCorkle and Danielle Rose Monzon ran the winning 400 in that order. The former record of 48.49 was set in 2011 by the North Kitsap quartet of Kamina Flemming, Reagan Colyer, Kristin Brown and Indigo Williams.

Bainbridge sophomore Taylee Undem moved out past the 18 foot mark in the long jump at 3A State with a second place jump of 18-03, the best on the peninsula this year.

Besides anchoring the winning 400 relay team, Monzon placed third in the long jump with a leap that nearly matched Undem’s. She came up one inch short with a jump of 18-02.

For those keeping record, the all-time West Sound record in the long jump was set 37years ago (has it been that long?) when the incomparable Sarah Level was all the state buzz as she starred at Port Townsend and within the state in the sprints and long jump.

Level in 1979, her senior year, nearly made 20 feet in the long jump, settling for 19 feet and seven and half inches for the all-time mark.

Two years before that, Level set the all-time West Sound records in the 100 at 11.78 and the 200 at 24.38.

In case you want to know, the all-time state record in the long jump is held by Everett’s Sherron Walker, who went 21-03 in 1975. Lake Washington’s Danielle Marshall ran the state record in the 100 in 1992 at 11.36 and Clover Park’s Donna Dennis clocked a 200 state record time of 23.39 in 1982.
