SK’s Nolan Van Amen and NK’s Kainen Warren lead state

South Kitsap senior Nolan Van Amen has a grip on a possible fourth straight 4A state title in the discus because he’s leading the state this year with a throw of 179-11.

Van Amen, who has a personal best throw of 184-08 he used to win his third title last May at the state meet, could be on track to possibly break the West Sound High School record of 188-01 that Bainbridge’s Matt Wauters set in 2004.

Discus throwers around the country are having a big year. Van Amen sits 47th among the nation’s discus throwers that are led by senior Turner Washington of

Canyon Del Oro in Arizona with a throw of 217-05. Eight others are also over 200 feet in the discus.

North Kitsap senior Kainen Warren is having a good year. He leads area high jumpers with a leap of six-foot-four and also tops locals in the triple jump with a 45-04.75 jump.

Warren also leads the state in the Heptathlon with 4386 points. The event consists of the 60 meters, long and high jumps, pole vault, shot put, 60 meter hurdles and the 1000 meter.
