Miami’s Erik Spoelstra and San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich expressed their dismay with the recent firing of successful NBA coaches and how the good organizations retain their coaches for long period of times to ensure continuity.
That’s a big joke. Ant they both should know better.
It got really absurd when Spoelstra said, “Even though we had four coaches, it’s been the same culture and relatively the same philosophy. San Antonio has been the same way. So we don’t see (success) as a coincidence. It’s really a shame for the coaching profession that it’s so volatile. But I’m also very grateful our organization doesn’t behave in that manner.”
Yeah, right. Just wait. When Spoelstra has a couple losing seasons, that Miami “philosophy” will have him back on the streets looking for work. We live in a world where “what have you done for me lately” is not the only rule. Owners have a “toy rule.” When it’s time to play with the toy, no coach in America is safe from the unemployment line. Just ask George Karl or Lionel Hollins.
