Two Bainbridge juniors are climbing up a stiff ladder in the state 800. Carlo Ruggiero has the best time in the Metro League at 1:56.11, which is 13th best among all state classifications and tops in Class 3A. Teammate Carter Hall has a 1.58.18 clocking, which is 62nd among state runners and seventh best in the tough Metro.
South Kitsap sophomore Deondre Davis has lowered his 300 hurdles time to 38.66, which is 7th in the state.
The Bainbridge boys quartet of Kyle Hammer, Hall, Ruggiero and Leander von Specht have moved to fifth best in all of state and tops in class 3A in the 1600 relay at 3:23.33, and their female teammates in the same event have moved close to breaking the four-minute mile. The female Spartans ‑ Emma Brundige, Elizabeth Messinger, Natalie Taylor and McKenzie Korican have clocked 4:02.98. There is stiff competition in the event, however. Eight schools have already broken the four-minute mile mark and the Spartans set 21st among all classifications in the state.
Brundige, by the way, had a very good week and is now second in Westsound in the 100 (12.45) and 200 (26.14) and first in the long jump 18 feet, one inch.
Central Kitsap sophomore Seth Tower moved into a eight-way tie for 7th among the state’s high jumpers with a leap of six feet, five inches and his senior teammate Zion Archer is now in ninth place in the triple jump in the state at 46 feet, three and three-quarters inches, which is a just about 11 inches behind Wilson’s David Njeri’s 47 feet and two and half inches, which leads the state.
Jesse Smith, a senior at Bremerton, has moved into a tie for 8th place among state pole-vaulters with his vault of 14 feet, six inches.
South Kitsap junior Payton DePoe is moving up the ladder toward the state top in the 800 (2:15.9) and 1600 (5:03.51) and is being pushed on her own team by a freshman, Evelyn Collins-Winn, who has run 2:16.05 and 5:05.91.
Central Kitsap freshman Ho’oponokauillani Fuiava, leads the area in the shot put (40 feet, three and half inches) and discus (132 feet, four inches). She is just over three feet from the all-time West Sound shot put record and seven feet from the all-time West Sound discus mark, and she has three more high school seasons to get them.
