It was a good Memorial Day weekend for Bremerton High School at the State Track and Field Meet held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Junior Lauryn Chandler broke the all-time West Sound record in the 100 hurdles while winning a 2A state championship and Chandler combined with Nyaijah Johnson, T’Caela Wilcher and Tyishea to win the 2A 400 relay state championship with a time of 48.98. They established a personal best of 48.78 in the prelims.
Jessie Smith, a Bremerton senior, just missed winning the 2A pole vault, placing second with a vault of 14 feet, three inches.
Chandler clocked a 15.31 in the prelims of the 100 hurdles and then turned on the jets in the finals to win in a record-breaking time of 14.84. The record had been 14.88 set by Reagan Colyer of North Kitsap in 2013.
The Bremerton girls tied for 11th in the team standings with 21 points.
Olympic sophomore Adam Johnson won two medals. He took second in the 2A 100 at 11.06 and eighth in the 200 at 23.22.
Some local freshmen had an impact on the meet. Wilcher is a freshman and Central Kitsap freshman Ho’oponokauillani Fuiava tossed the shot put 42 feet for second place in the 3A State Meet. Teammate Maya Nichols, also a freshman, placed seventh in the 3200 in 11:04.60, Klahowya freshman Sara Kurgan ran to a 2:25.47 in the 1A State 800 to place fourth and South Kitsap freshman Evelyn Collins-Winn took eighth place in the 4A State 800 with a time of 2:17.44, finishing just a quick tick behind junior teammate Paxton DePoe, who ran 7th with a time of 2:16.71.
Port Angeles freshman Millie Long finished third in the 2A State 300 hurdles with a time of 45.57. Her sister, Gracie Long, a senior, won the 1600 with a time of 4:58.72 and took second in the 3200 at 11:00.89.
South Kitsap senior Emily Reeder placed third in the shot with a heave of 41 feet, one inch. Teammate Deyondre Davis, a sophomore, took second in the 110 hurdles at 14.54 and placed third in the 300 hurdles at 38.83.
Sequim junior Riley Martin raced to third in the state 2A 110 hurdles in 15.30 and North Kitsap junior Andrew Blackmore was right behind him in fourth place at 15.47.
Bainbridge junior Carlo Ruggiero lowered his best time in the 800 to 1:54.89 in the state 3A meet to take fourth place, and Olympic junior Hanna Troy also placed fourth in the 2A 100 at 12.30 and seventh in the 200 at 26.29.
Central Kitsap sophomore Seth Tower took fifth in 3A state high jump at six feet, two inches and Raelee Moore, a junior at NK, was fifth in the long jump at 17-03.5. Her teammate, senior Annika Taylor, also took a fifth, in the 800 at 2:19.53.
Sequim junior Fischer Jensen took fifth in the 2A 300 hurdles at 41.03 (he ran a 40.89 in the prelims).
Other results: Bainbridge 1600 relay of McKenzie Korican, Elizabeth Messinger, Natalie Taylor and Emma Brundige clocked 4:05.63 for sixth in the 3A race; Port Townsend junior Aubry Botkin took sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.04); Sequim got two sixth places from Elizabeth Sweet in the pole vault (11 feet) and Alec Shingleton in the 400 (50.71).
Sequim received a seventh place out of its 1600 relay team of Logan Laxson, Murray Bingham, Darren Salazar and Shingleton with a time of 3:26.99 and Bingham placed seventh in the 800 (1:57.52); Bainbridge’s Brundige placed seventh in the 100 (12.52) and Kingston senior James Dillow was seventh in the 21A 200 (23.13).
Klahowya’s Dylan Jackson, a sophomore, claimed seven in the state 1A (23.57) held at Eastern Washington University, and North Mason senior Lily Campbell took an eighth in the 2A discus (120-08) (she was also ninth in the shot put at 35-07)and North Kitsap sophomore Jameson Moore was eighth n the 2A discus at 140 feet two inches.
In team scoring, South Kitsap took 13th with 17.5 points in 4A; Central Kitsap 16th with 16 points in 3A; Port Angels ninth with 24 points, Bremerton tied for 11th with 21, North Kitsap tied for 20th with 14, Olympic tied for 23rd with 11; North Mason tied for 35th with six and Sequim tied for 44th with three. Klahowya got five points for a 35th place tie and Port Townsend tied for 37th with three in 1A.
Boys’ team scoring saw South Kitsap tie for 21st with 14 points; CK and Bainbridge tied for 24th with nine points in 3A and Sequim was 9th with 22 points, Olympic tied for 25th with nine, Bremerton tied for 27th with eight and Kingston and North Kitsap tied for 31st with six.
