TOP OF THE TOWN – Well, the Washington Huskies first football test was a c-. or maybe worse. The Huskies looked undisciplined in losing the Apple Cup to Washington State. They had 16 penalties, for cripes sake. They had opportunities to score touchdowns that turned into four field goals. Their offensive line wasn’t good. Washington State was the better team its quarterback, John Mateer, looked NFL ready. Husky first-year coach Jeff Fisch looked like a rookie. He made an awful decision in a divisive play that decided the game. Facing fourth and goal on the Washington State one-yard line with time running out, the Huskies ran a play everybody in the country knew they shouldn’t run, a run to the short side of the field that had only one chance – none – instead of doing the right thing and run 5-9. 225-pound junior, Jonah Coleman smashing in straight ahead for the one yard and game-winning touchdown. It brought back the dreadful memories of the XLIX Super Bowl in 2015 when the Seahawks passed from the one-yard line in the dying seconds instead of running rugged Marshawn Lynch up the middle. The pass was intercepted by New England cornerback Malcolm Butler to deny the Seahawks a second straight Super Bowl win. It was a crushing defeat and will forever be remembered. Fisch’s decision to run such a stupid play instead of doing the logical and run Coleman may also be remembered when Apple Cup is discussed. Bottom line is Washington State looked good and the Huskies did not. It begs the question, has the wrong major football team from the state of Washington joined the big boys in the Big Ten?
